Review: This weekend my girls and I headed to South Beach for the famous festival Art Basel. For those that are not familiar Art Basel is a presentation of artwork from across the globe. There are over 250 world galleries that participate in various exhibits throughout Miami bringing over 70,000 visitors yearly. This festival is exciting and inspiring time for artist, collectors, and art enthusiast amateur and seasoned alike. After the art exhibits, there are fabulous parties to attend that feature A-list celebrities such as Swiss Beats, 2- chains, Drake, and Wu-tang! Just a good time right before the Christmas season gets into full swing and a great way to break up your winter blues.
As a first time attendee, I was excited to see what the fuss was about and ready to twirl my way through Miami. Unfortunately, after our first night, the temperatures drop significantly with lows in the 50's ! Yikes, talk about brrrr! Of course, that put a damper on our plans. We were able to see some exhibits but the weekend ended up filled with brunch at some of Miami's most popular brunch spots! And of course, you know I was all for it! I even came up with a hashtag #brunchbasel. Our first stop was Sugarcane, hailed as the "Best New Restaurant” by Miami New Times and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was great the service was amazing, and the food was delicious. The most important brunch feature was bottomless beverages. On Saturdays, Sugarcane offers bottomless mojitos and sangria at $25 per person plus live music by “Los Clásicos de Cuba” from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. So you know, brunch was lit! The servers are "on top of it " when it comes to refilling your glass. They kept the libations following through our 4-hour brunch.
Although I didn't partake in the bottomless option, I did have an excellent passionfruit juice that was divine! My friend Richard, a Miami native joined us and introduced us to the restaurants signature beet mojitos, that got rave reviews from the two ladies who were adventurous enough to try!
While having brunch, I noticed this young lady sitting eating brunch; I whispered to my friends, Hey! I think I follow that girl over there on Instagram; I stated "I'm going to go over and say hi!" They snickered -- "what if it's not her!" I began to doubt, what if it wasn't her and I made a total fool of myself. My friends assured me that if it wasn't her, they were going to laugh me out of the restaurant. I began to question whether I was right! Shaken for all of two seconds I marched right over and introduced myself. I asked the young lady her name and guess what I was correct! It was Loni Swain media personality and blogger who recently started following me on @brunchnista. We hugged and exchanged pleasantries- then I brought her over to my doubtful crew for an introduction and the best " hahaha see I told you" moment of the weekend. Loni was gracious and invited us to a show she was hosting that evening! The power of social media is fantastic when used for good!
Sugarcane cuisine is globally-inspired served from three kitchens - an open fire grill, raw bar, and traditional kitchen.
The dining style is a focused on celebrating the simple pleasures in life–eating well and friendship, ( its like they read my blog) so the food is delivered tapas style –creating a shared dining experience. I do enjoy this type of dining style because then I get to taste several different items! My top dishes were the chicken, sweet potatoes, corn, and waffles! The waffles were light and fluffy and practically melted in my mouth! The chicken was grilled to perfection with teriyaki marinade that was mouth watering. The Mexican corn gave me Cinco de Mayo vibes in December. I don't know if it was the Miami air, dining with friends, but this was one of my top brunch spots of the year! Music, food, friends, and drinks are all the elements of a perfect brunch!
